The briefing

World of the wasteland

Everything a new recruit needs: what Sunfall was, how the years since went, who runs the cities, who we are, and where the story picks up.

Sunfall — the day the sky came down

Late in the eighties an asteroid hit the Earth. Survivors call it Sunfall — after the rock that devastated our planet: Aten, named after the Sun god of Ancient Egypt. Nobody out here agrees on the date. Everybody agrees on the sound.

Year zero
The impact

Tsunamis swallowed the coasts in a single afternoon. New fault lines woke volcanoes that had been quiet for millennia; the continent's spine started smoking and never fully stopped.

Ash winter
The long dust

Harvests failed, rivers changed their minds, and whole regions settled into desert, ice or floodplain. The weather has been picking fights ever since.

What was left
What survived

Workshops. Water pumps. People stubborn enough to fix both. The old federal government never came back — the cities did, one grid and one clean well at a time.

Chronology

Bygone Days
Up to the Late '80s

Everything before the 1980s survives in a handful of books and magnetic tapes. The details went first, then the dates. What is left is turning into myth, and nobody can tell which parts.

Neon Eden
Late '80s

The last good decade, remembered as a paradise. Everyone under twenty knows it only from their elders’ stories, and anything physical that survived from it — a radio, a jacket, a cassette — is worth trading a week of work for.

Eventide
The dark years

Nuclear winter, resource wars, and the slow collapse of everything that held people together. Most of what was lost in that stretch was knowledge. Nobody talks about it.

Rebirth
Now

The cities formalised the UCA and started building again — modelled, as far as anyone can manage, on the Neon Eden they never saw. The Phoenixes rose fast in that climate, with Hawke at the front.

The United Cities of America

No capital. No federal army. What grew back after Sunfall is a loose, city-first federation — autonomous cities that cooperate when it pays, bound by contracts and reputation instead of law. In a world like that, a crew with a good track record matters more than a flag.

How it holds
City sovereignty

Every city rules itself. Cooperation happens through mutual-aid pacts, corridor agreements and ad hoc councils — voluntary, and only when it makes sense.

How deals work
Contracts over laws

Intercity projects run on contracts, brokers and reputation. A clean track record carries more weight than any court ever did.

How order keeps
Local muscle, local law

Cities keep their own militias. Disputes end in arbitration or embargoes, not wars. Corridor security and disaster response get contracted out — often to crews like ours.

How it survives
Built to take a hit

Microgrids, microfactories, decentralised water, local food. Everything modular, everything repairable — because the weather stopped being polite decades ago.

The Phoenixes

Five people, one battered truck, and a name that's a promise: from the ashes, up.

The Phoenixes — Leo, Ben, Hawke, Nix and Rhea

Hawke leads them — a factory foreman before Sunfall, a builder after it. Around him: Ben Guo on the tools, Leo Montez reading the weather, Nix on the radio and Rhea Moss Okoro watching the road. Five people who decided the fix was worth the trouble.

Story so far

Chapter one · Back to New York

The call came in on a Tuesday. Mayor Delaros of New York wants the Phoenixes to rebuild the Statue of Liberty.

Before any of that, there’s the storm. It hit hard enough to leave our camp in pieces, and the first job back in New York is picking them up.

Not everyone came here only for the work. The survivor lists from the flood years were never finished, and Ben has been quietly reading them for a decade. He hasn’t told Hawke why.

The city itself is on its knees. New Yorkers need all the help we can give, and they’ll help us in return. What each side is willing to trade is where the dilemmas start.
